Black Jersey

Name: She had a different name at some point, but for so long we’ve just been calling her “Black Jersey”
D.O.B:
Unknown.
Dam to Jersey
Maternal Grandam to New Jersey

She’s a bit of character. Doesn’t really like to be touched, but is extremely curious and always needs to know what is going on.

Gidget

Today we bought a new cow to bring to the farm. She is a registered Brown Swiss cow.

Name: Maple Cove Atlas Gidget
D.O.B.: 06/19/2002

We bought her from the Country Critters Farm in Winchester, NH. Sometime this week, we’ll be going to to go pick her up and bring her to Red Oak Hill Farm. She’s due to calve sometime next month, so it is like buying two cows for one!

Update:

She’s here:

Cow Barn

The barn in which we keep the cows was constructed in 1979. Here’s a couple shots of the barn while it was being built:

Now, here is how it looks present-day. It is a tie stall barn that holds approximately 100 cows at capacity.

A lot of basketball was played on this hoop over the years. Better to shut the door when playing, however.

This section of the barn is the milkroom and office. The milk is kept in large stainless steel, chilled bulk tanks while waiting for the truck to come pick it up. The small steel openings on either side of the doors are where the milk truck runs a hose through and connects it to the bulk tank to pump the milk out into the truck.
